Salzburg welcomed me this week with sunshine and a heat wave. Summer is in full swing here in Austria. With this heat an evening swim is part of my daily routine. The lakes around Salzburg are magnificent. Nothing compares to swimming in a fresh lake, with the sun shining on your back and the water gently caressing your whole body.  Lake swimming gives me an exhilarating feeling of freedom, while at the same time being incredibly soothing and relaxing.

The weightlessness in the water has a calming effect on my mind and soul. It’s like mindfulness meditation in motion. I once read that swimming in lakes releases endorphins, the body’s natural happy chemicals.  In essence, swimming is a natural anti-depression/anti-anxiety treatment! How cool is that?

Talking about water: We want to put a special focus on hydration, especially when it’s that hot. Our bodies are more or less 60% water. We are constantly losing water, primarily via sweat and urine. A rule of thumb is to have 8 x 8 oz glasses per day which equals 2 liters (or half a gallon). During high heat and exercise make sure to drink enough to compensate for the lost fluids. I put a carafe with water, lemons slices, and fresh mint leaves on my desk so I don’t forget to drink.


1 Lemon with peel, cut in pieces
1/4 medium sized aloe vera leave, filet (optional)
1 serving turmeric tonic
1 serving marine collagen 
2 – 3 cups cold water
2 packets stevia, to taste
1 cup ice cubes (optional)


Put all the ingredients into a high-speed blender and blend until smooth. If you want it super cold and refreshing add ice cubes.

Lemons with peels are like miracle workers when it comes to the glow and health of your skin. One of my very close friend, who has been dealing with psoriasis since her teenage years, tried a whole lemon in her green smoothies a while ago. Her skin condition immediately improved. It was really pretty magical. Now my girlfriends and I are all into having our fix of lemon peel whenever we can. It makes your skin glow and look its best. Lemon peel is in fact very helpful in fighting and preventing all kind of skin problems like acne, wrinkles, dark spots and pigmentation. Lemon peel is also rich in antioxidants and thus helps to detoxify our skin. Using whole lemons gives you more vitamins and polyphenols, may help prevent cancer, may improve bone health, and decrease cholesterol levels.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body.  It is available in your muscles, skin, blood, bones, cartilage, and ligaments. I love to add collagen to my smoothies and home-made lemonades as it:

  • Promotes skin elasticity
  • Holds together your bones and muscles
  • Protects your organs
  • Provides structure to joints and tendons

Our bodies do produces collagen but as we age they get lazy and make less of it.  Life style habits like smoking, sun exposure, and an unhealthy diet also slow down collagen production. Without this important building block, we may start to see wrinkles and sagging skin, or even experience joint pain. Vitamin C (as in lemon) plays an important part in collagen synthesis when it comes to skin health but also for bone healing, and to reduce oxidative stress.

Turmeric is a great, healing spice that’s rightfully become “en vouge” over the past couple of years.  My refreshing lemonade is a great way to get your daily fix.

So why again is turmeric so amazing?

Turmeric has great anti-inflammatory properties. The combination of turmeric, boswellia, cinnamon, clove, ginger, and cardamom in the turmeric tonic can help reduce joint pain, accelerate wound healing, and relieve inflammation in the gut. It may also improve immune health.

There are many studies about the benefits of turmeric for heart health, digestive health, mental health, liver function, reducing inflammation, and blood sugar balance.

Aloe Vera has been used internally and externally because of its healing properties for ages. I add it to my lemonade because of its healing effects on the gut but also because it is super hydrating. If you want to know more about why Aloe rocks, here we go
